Definition- Pop culture that includes the people, language fashion, and lifestyle surrounding the sport of surfing.
We chose this subculture because we like the beach and always wanted to try surfing.
Historical Examples- Ancient Polynesians were the first to start this culture. It started mostly in Hawaii, Australia, and California. In the 1960's was when it gained popularity. Whenever, people were working and somebody said "surfs up!" the office cleared out and everybody ran to the beach.
Modern Day Example- Professional surfer Bethany Hamilton survived a shark attack in 2003, her left arm was bitten off she was only 13 years old when she went for a morning swim along the tunnels beach in Kauai. Around 7:30 a.m she way lying on her surf board with her left arm dangling in the water and a 14 foot tiger shark came along and bit her.Another Example of Modern day surfers is that the local surfer gangs in Malibu and on Hawaii know as Da Hui have been known to threaten tourists with physical violence for invading their territory.
