What really surprised me after learning about Ellis Island is that they had to check everyone's eye for a certain eye disease. But how they did that, was even more surprising. They did that by pulling the persons eyelid upwards and then checking the eye.
I really wanted to more about the medical procedures people had to go through to enter America.
I found out that doctors would pay close attention to the immigrants as they climbed the stairs to the second floor. The doctors looked for signs of weakness, heavy breathing, and other signs of mental disturbances. Then when the immigrants reached to the top, the doctors examined their hair, neck, face, and hands. When the doctor noticed something wrong, they would mark the immigrants shirt with a letter. After that was the dreaded eye doctor.
