Part 1:
What is the difference between aid, a treaty, and an alliance?
The difference is that an aid is when a country sends supplies to another country such as food or weapons. For example, in 1941 the president established a Lend-Lease Act in WWII. This act allowed U.S. troops to help other countries during the war. An aid wasn't a really big agreement. A treaty is usually on paper. Treaties would sometimes reduce the power of other countries by taking their territories and force significant reparation payments. Treaties were a little bit bigger than aids but it wasn't the biggest type of agreement. An alliance was the biggest of all the agreements. It was like a, " If you punch him then I'm going to punch you back" kind of agreement. For example in World War 1 the members of the Triple Entente were the French Republic, the British Empire and the Russian Empire.
Part 2:
Why isn't the U.S. part of this diagram? Does the U.S. become part of this diagram at some point? When? Why do they join?
The U.S. is not part of the diagram because they wanted to stay out of the fighting. Later on in the war, the U.S. came in to fight on April 2, 1917 after Germany started to attack American vessels such as the Lusitania, a British ship attacked by the Germans and nearly 1,200 people were killed and 128 Americans were killed also.
