My Djedo (Grandpa in Croatian) went through Ellis Island. His journey started in his homeland Croatia at age 15 . He had to escape with his brother and three sisters from Croatia to Slovenian. They finally got to the border. But they forgot about the country's soldiers guarded the border at all times because of the Nazis (during WWII). Two of the three of my Djedo's sisters got caught when trying to cross the border. Since the were young, there wasn't any serious consequences, but they did get sent back to Croatia. My Djedo, his brother, and his last sister got sponsors and went on a boat to Ellis Island. The boat went through the Mediterranean Sea, the Tyrrhenian Sea, the Atlantic Ocean, and finally the Hudson Bay. After a long boat ride, they made it to America. My Djedo said he doesn't remember much. He said it was night when he came to America and he couldn't really see anything, but he saw the Statue of Liberty clearly. He remembers staying at Ellis Island for a few weeks and there was long hours of just sitting. If he wasn't bored out of his mind, he was being picked and poked at by doctors. After those long weeks, they left Ellis Island. After leaving Ellis Island they took a train to Chicago, to meet their cousins.
My Djedo's journey to America affected my story because, if my Djedo never met my Buscia (Grandma in Polish), then I wouldn't exist. My story started with my Djedo coming to America, it was in the process of being created.
